Amish Butter Cookies

Amish Butter Cookies are one of the best soft sugar cookies around. They are easy to make and you most likely have all of the ingredients in your pantry. You’ll love their buttery flavor. The recipe makes about three dozen cookies, so you’ll have plenty to share (or keep to yourself 😉 )

Years ago, I worked for a company that built natural gas pipelines. We traveled all over the country and would stay in a place for several months until that section of the pipeline was complete.

We did a job in Iowa back in 1999 and we were right in the middle of Amish country. Talk about a neat experience. I’d look out the window of our office trailer and see the horse and buggies go by. I loved it.

When we got a little bit of time, we’d go down to their homes and buy some of their food and it was absolutely amazing. Let me tell you, it was downright homemade awesomeness.

These Amish Butter Cookies are no exception. They have a more creamy flavor to them and are super delish!

Amish Desserts

We also spent about six months in Georgia and the town we stayed in had a Mennonite bakery on the outskirts. It was all I could do to get through the morning before going to get us donuts. Let me tell you, the Amish and Mennonite know how to bake.

I must say, it’s a good thing that I am not too close to any of their restaurants or bakeries, or I would be in trouble. Their baked goods are delish!

Recipe and printable instructions listed below.

Add the butter to a mixing bowl. I forget, almost every time, to soften the butter. I simply put it in the microwave for about 20 seconds and that does the trick.

Pour the sugar into the mixing bowl.

Add the powdered sugar next. Cream the sugars and butter. It’s gettin’ good.

Finally, add the sifted flour, baking soda, cream of tartar, and salt to the mixture. Mix everything together. It will be a pretty thick batter.

Scoop the cookie dough onto a baking sheet. The cookie dough isn’t going to spread much at all so you can set the cookies about 1-inch apart.

This recipe makes three dozen cookies with a medium-sized scoop. If you want more cookies, you can scoop them a little smaller and you can get at least four dozen.

Bake for 8-10 minutes or until they are barely golden brown.
