It’s not always an easy task to keep kids reading. For boys, it takes a lot of action and adventure to keep them interested. In a world where video games get the most attention, it’s tough to find books they want to read instead of gaming.
Here’s a list of five books that my boys loved, and had a hard time putting down:
This is the first book in a series of 11. I am guessing that the series will continue, creating more great reading for your kids. Both of my boys devoured these books. I’ve already pre-ordered the 11th book. They can’t wait until it arrives. Click here if you’d like books 1-10. (Book 11 releases in November 2016).
Once the kids have completed the books, you can buy or rent the movies. The movies are a ton of fun.
Minecraft Construction Handbook
I have to admit, I was leery of these books at first. I am pretty anti video games, and I didn’t want to encourage any more gaming. But, what I’ve learned about Minecraft in the past year has been astounding. Minecraft is being used all over the world to teach kids math, language arts, science, art, and so much more. So, once I figured out that my boys were learning through Minecraft, I was all over making sure they got more time playing after they read these books. Click here for the 4-book series.
The Minecraft Construction Handbook is a great book for teaching them more about the game, and they are reading! Once they finish this book, they can move on to the next in the series.
The Lightning Thief is the first book in a series of five. They are much longer and are geared toward middle and high school students. There are two movies adapted from the books, so it’s fun for kids to read the books and then watch the movies.
Percy Jackson is a demigod, and when problems arise, he is needed to save the world. Tweens and teens can identify with the character because he starts off as a twelve-year-old, and grows into high school age.

This has to be one of my all-time favorite books that I read as a child. I was super excited to introduce it to my kids. We’ve been reading Shel Silverstein’s poems now for years. The boys will ask me to read the poems at bedtime, and we all crack up laughing. You will get a kick out of the poems that have been popular for generations. This is a must-have book in your library collection.
This is one of those books you will want to purchase and have in your hands, as opposed to downloading on Kindle, because the drawings alone are fun to look over and enjoy.
The great think about Goosebumps is that once you finish a book, there are plenty in the series to read next. I’m not even sure how many Goosebumps books are out there, but there are a lot. Boys seem to love scary, gross stories, and these fit the bill.
Goosebumps, the movie, with Jack Black, is a great movie to watch. We bought the movie and have watched it several times. There’s even a cameo of Goosebumps author, R.L. Stine.
